Why students SHOULD be paid
Many experts say that paying the students money for getting good grades is a good incentive that would encourage students to improve grades and behavior. Laura Fitzpatrick wrote in her article for Time USA said that "paying students teaches that rewards come to those that work hard". Fitzpatrick also says that being paid for their grades is more like the real world and getting paid for doing well at your job and gives them experience with a paycheck. Her studies also show that students were 30% more likely to register for a 2nd trimester and they also earned more credits. Fitzpatrick said that "students showed signs of devoting more time to their studies and more students were passing their classes". Another positive reason Fitzpatrick says students should be paid is that the money low income students earn helps support their family and the money students in general earn also helps pay for college." This means that the students who work hard enough to earn money can put that money towards the college that they also worked hard to get into, it’s a win-win chain reaction.
In another article in Teen Ink, Maria F. says that "kids love money so they will work hard to get the money they want." She also says that grades are also dependent on the student’s behavior so paying students would also improve the overall student behavior in school. This could reduce bullying and crime rates, and will teach students a sense of responsibility. Maria also writes that teens will focus more on school and focus is one of the keys to success, in and out of the school during the developmental years of their lives.
USA Today’s Greg Toppo says that paying students for having good grades with encourage kids to make smart decisions and will enforce the idea that if students work very hard and get help when they need it, they can accomplish big things.
